The White Horse Cafes, situated at the Market Place, Thirsk is named after the famous landmark at Kilburn, near Thirsk. The Almond family have been in the business since 1982 and their attention to quality, service and value has created a local reputation.

It is our aim to keep high standards within the business, using only the best raw materials and up to date equipment, to ensure the best possible product. We only use top quality line caught Norwegian haddock sourced from sustainable stock.

Each year since 2002 both outlets have been awarded the Seafish Frier Quality Assurance Award. This award is presented by the Seafish Industry to friers who meet exacting standards of quality throughout their premises, from good fish and chips to helpful, friendly staff, high levels of hygiene and good practice in handling and cooking food.

In past years we have also had both shops nominated for the new ‘Flavours of Herriot Country’ award in the Fish and Chip category. With the help of our hard working and conscientious staff we feel the WHITE HORSE CAFÉ are the ideal place to eat and take a break… enjoy.

OUR FISH

We only use line caught Norwegian Haddock, our supplier only catches from a specific latitude and at certain times of the year when the haddock is at its best in terms of weight, taste and flavour.

Line caught Haddock has a whiter flesh and gives a firmer fillet compared to trawler caught fish which is much more prone to bleeding out (bruising) while caught up in the net. By using different sized hooks and bait, line fishing gives less chance of the smaller, younger fish been caught, unlike trawler fishing which also damages the sea bed.

This altogether makes our fish qualify to strict MSC guidelines by achieving well managed and sustainable fishing standards. Therefore, ensuring future generations will be able to enjoy great quality fish.

POTATOES

We have a great supplier, who is endlessly trying to source the best potatoes available throughout the year. We mainly use only Cambridge or Lincolnshire grown Sigita potatoes, although in the last couple of years more local farmers are beginning to produce good samples.

All our chips are freshly cut and prepared each day in our kitchen, our ideal chip should be crispy on the outside with a light and fluffy centre.

RECYCLING

We are now recycling all our food waste in separate containers to general waste, as well as all our cardboard at both shops. We have recently moved away from polystyrene and moved to more environmentally friendly cardboard packaging. Our used cooking oil and fat are taken away weekly by a fully licensed waste management company for recycling.
